No Bake Virtual Cookie Exchange

(Due to some technical difficulties, this post is republished from 11/29/18)

First, thank you to Carol at Just Let Me Quilt who has sponsored this for many years.  Oh yes, I did promise a giveaway and you will find it at the bottom of the blog….but first TRADITIONS!

There are many Christmas Traditions that I love: candles, wreaths, lessons and carols,  trees and holiday punch. My mother always made a whiskey sour punch – she was famous for it. Her secret ingredient was one can of beer to the whiskey sour recipe on the mix she bought. Everyone loved it, and, as the five children grew up, yes we did taste it.  I don’t think any of us loved it, but we pretended to!

Onto some fun for you! I made two things to share in this exchange. One is a set of placemats and the other is the cookie recipe. For some reason, I had a hard time thinking of what I wanted to do….I don’t know why. Part of it is that we decorate, but not excessively.  I have a friend who it took 2 months and 28 box from storage to decorate (I miss you Trudy).  So, I decided I would purchase a Jolly Box from the Fat Quarter Shop and whip up something when I saw what I got.  Cookie Cutter Placemats are what I did!

Cookie Cutter Placemats:
8 Fat quarters and 1 Yard of Backing Fabric. [North Pole by Stacy Iest Hsu for Moda] 3/4 yard fusible
2 cookie cutters – house and tree (use anything you like or have)

Make the strip sets

  1. First sew the strip sets together to make the left and right side.
  2. Left side strips ====> 3.5″ strip |1″ strip | 2.5″ strip | 1.5″ Strip
  3. Right side strips ====> 1.5″ strip| 2.5″ strip

Make the Blocks – do not attach to strip set yet

  1. Blocks Top =====> 1.5″ strip| 2″ strip ( 2 different fabrics in this version)
  2. Sew Top unit to block. ( 2 different fabrics for the block)
  3. Block Bottom. ======> 2″ strip | 1.5″ strip
  4. Sew Bottom unit to block

Make Block Center [check fusible instructions & follow them]

  1. Iron fusible to the fabrics for the Trees, Houses ( 2 different fabrics in this version)
  2. Trace 2 houses on each fabric for the houses, trace 4 trees.  Cut them out.
  3. Fuse to the blocks, let cool, & remove paper (use pin to score to help remove paper)
  4. Sew around images, I used invisible thread and a small zig zag (1.5, 1.5 settings on my machine.

Finish as Desired: I pillow-cased these placemats, directions follow.

  1. Layer the top and bottom right sides together on top of the batting.
  2. Leave a hole to turn the placemat right sides out.
  3. Sew together with 1/4″ seam. Trim Corners.
  4. Push out corners through the hole and turn inside out.
  5. Roll the edges with your fingers and press.
  6. Use a narrow stitch to go around the placemat.
  7. Quilt as desired ( I went down all the long seams and around the inside of the block).

Now for the reason you are reading this….the cookies!

cookie_exchange_cutter_333_017.jpgThe cookies I’d like to share are Quick Fudge Cookies. These are fast! fast! fast!  cookie_exchange_cutter_012.jpg

I have made these a gazillion times, and for my allergic son I substituted the following:  margarine for butter, more oatmeal/coconut for the nuts/soymilk for the milk.  It works just fine.  I made these in less than 15 minutes while making dinner the other night.

Here is the giveaway Alpine Ice bundle – given to me by Island Batik.   Very easy – please leave a comment with how you follow my blog.  Comments need to be made by 11:59 PM December 3rd!
