Destination: Quilt Along – Block 12

Block 12 is upon us and we are at the end of our block releases for the Destination: Quilt Along!

You have some more mountains to climb before you are finished, but this block will be a help. Bobbi of Snowy Days Quilting is our designer and she has a fun twist for doing this block. It reminds me of an off-sided log cabin on point – called Modern Peaks.

This is Bobbi’s version. It may be that this is one of the simplest blocks, and I think after all your hard work you deserve a break. The piecing is simple and following the directions will get you there.

You can find Bobbie’s pattern HERE.

This is my version of the block. It was fast to cut out (see my caveat #2 below) and fast to sew. Trimming was the hardest thing about this. I am calling my version “…Thy Purple Mountains”.

My Hints:

1. Choosing Fabrics:
Using a light, medium and dark is helpful in this block. I used all purple, but you could vary the colors like Bobbie did.

2. Cutting:
I miscut one of my fabrics, so my picture is a little different than the pattern, but it worked. I assumed that pieces B & D were the same size. They aren’t!

3. Rulers:
When trimming, if you have a 12 1/2″ square ruler to trim this, it will be so much easier! If not, line it up with the right numbers on your cutting mat. It works, but I always triple check when I trim that way to be sure it will be enough. I will use rulers on both the left and the right to move it around to get it just right.

Segment Three Wrap Up

I have not decided what I am doing with my pieces, but I believe they will be placemats. Please see what the other designers have come up with here. I promise to be back here next Tuesday with some finished placemats to show. Right now I am deciding between these two versions. I think I like the off centered version best.

Love this block – it reminds me of the Great Smoky Mountains!! Especially with the purples.

Your blocks will make great placemats! The off-set version is my favorite. It goes with the photography rule of 1/3:2/3 for the focal point.

Hi Kathleen! What a fun block and I really like your version. The purples with that background – it’s like the clouds are floating past. It seemed like this block came so quickly on the heels of the last one! Time is just flying by, I guess. Nice job! ~smile~ Roseanne
