Destination: Quilt Along – Block 5

Segment 2 begins and I am so pleased to share my block with you. This block is something near and dear to my heart. Whenever my husband and I travel, we love to ride a ferry. We have taken them in the US, Bermuda and Canada. This ferry, however, is the one I love.

The Machigonne II crosses Portland Harbor to Peaks Island, ME about 12 times a day (Monday and Tuesday night there is another ferry). Here she is about to head out to Peaks,  just after sunset in July. She carries up to 12 cars, and 399 people. Everytime I get on the boat, I swear my blood pressure drops as I begin to feel the ocean breeze – even in the dead of winter.

Here is a picture of the block you will make.  It has a lot of pieces, but it is no different than any other block. Take your time: Piece by piece, row by row…you will make that block grow! Press the button below to download the block.

Now for a few hints to get you going.

1. Starch your fabric. Some of the pieces are small. It really does help.

2.  Prepare to cut the fabric by making a second copy of the cutting sheet.  First cut apart by color.  Then, as you cut one color, cut apart the pieces and have pins/clips ready to attach to the fabric.

3.  Cutting can take up to an hour, but you can also do in smaller sections once you have the pieces together.

4.  Begin piecing section by section.  I lay them out as above, right near the pattern to make sure I have all I need.

You can piece this in about an hour if you go methodically row by row.   I like to keep the pattern to the left of the sewing machine and the pieces on a design boards (I made some here).  I finger press the small sections then press as a unit is done!

Be sure to check out the designers and their vision for this block, along with their hints. It is so much fun to see what they do with your block.

What a cool block – now I want to make all of them, I’m always a little late to the party! I’m sure that ferry is a welcoming site!

Wow, such a great block, Kathleen!!! I have many ferry ride memories, too, from living in Japan. We would take our bicycles along and then bike around the island destination.

This is a great block. You did a very good job of creating a realistic version of the ferry. Thanks!

I love your Ferry Kathleen. It is a perfect addition to the quilt and you made your beloved Machigonne very proud I’m sure!

I love love love this ferry. It makes me want to travel to my favourite ferry and then to the studio. Unfortunately it’s still not running due to another wildfire so I’ll have to go the long way around to get some quilts on the longarm for the Wildfire Quilt Drive. Looking forward to getting there but sure will miss my ferry ride.
