Project Quilting 2021.1

I hemmed and hawed all week about whether I was going to do something for this week’s challenge: Challenge 1 – Illuminating + Ultimate Gray. I was trying to explain to my husband what Pantone is and what they do. If you want to know more about it, here is a link to Pantone’s own explanation.

For me, I wanted to try something new. For 2021 I am trying things that I have put off trying. So I picked 2 fabrics I loved; one a yellow and gray with strips of newsprint and another with triangles. Playing with improv triangles was my goal and I would use strips and other pieces as needed to fill in the piece.

I made a few triangles and strips and then decided I wanted some curvy flying geese. I didn’t have a lot of fabric, made a quick pattern in Electric Quilt 8* with the swath tool. I’ll make a little tutorial on how to make this in EQ8 for my Tips/Tutorials on the 22nd! Meanwhile, if you want to play here is a sheet of some of what I drew.

I plugged in my new BSR and made a little triangle quilting motif and it was done! Maybe 3 hours of work, but a lot of cogitating in the background.

And for the finish I did a facing with corner triangles…see my tutorial here. And, a little label in the top corner. That is all folks, gotta get this post up before the carriage turns into a pumpkin! I also linked up to my favorite DrEAMi linky party – drop everything and make it – which is what I did!

Hi Kathleen! Nice job meeting the challenge colors and I adore the gray triangles backing the paper pieced triangles. Now you get a week off before the next challenge is released, I think. ~smile~ Roseanne

This is such a happy little piece! Ok, swath tool – I seriously need to learn EQ8 this year.

Oh this is so neat! I love the improv and the fabrics and the stitching.

Great improv piece Kathleen. I’m beginning to think I need a new computer to be able to get EQ8! You do such wonderful things with it!

Congrats on this PQ12.1 improv geese finish, Kathleen! Are those corner triangles on the back for hanging the piece any which direction? I meant to add those to my own entry. Realized I’d forgotten them just as I was finishing the binding! :o((

Regarding your short and sweet post… I’ve been known to release a rather bare bones post with minimal verbiage and a finished picture. Once I’ve linked up with Project QUILTING, I update the post with more details. Something to consider, if you find yourself racing the deadline, again.

Very cute. I also did a Challenge project, and also love the two Pantone Colors of the Year.

Ha! I didn’t even know Swath Tool was a thing in EQ8….I’ve got so much to learn! 🙂 That yellow fabric with the newsprint is just the perfect print. I never think of yellow as a color that I like all that much but recently I’m loving all the yellow things. Your piece looks so good!

This is so cute, Kathleen! I joined Kari’s EQ8 lessons and look forward to learning more than the basics I use. I have looked at the swath tool but never tried it! I’ve always wondered how those curved flying geese were made and now I know it’s my non-favorite paper piecing! However, I may have to try it again with something like this! Love it!

Love how you are doing what YOU want to do! This challenge is perfect!

I will have to search this Pantone out…I love hearing your thought process and the yellow and grey are fabulous.

All kinds of nifty processes going on in this fun little piece–flying geese, facing w/label, FMQ triangles, fav fabrics, deadline! Great job getting it done for PQ!

I love this mini! I know it doesn’t look anything like a school bus but I see buses on a cloudy day anyway-funny how associations to images work! That piecing looks tiny!

I loved this when I saw it on Instagram. Such a fun piece. I like how you do the triangles with a facing…I am mystified so will check out your tutorial!

That swath tool is kinda neat isn’t it. I used it once for an IB challenge. I like what you created, you had your creative hat on;)

Hi Kathleen, what a lovely mini for the first challenge of Project Quilting. The fabrics and the techniques really worked well. I love the triangle FMQ design. Thanks so much for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks. Take care.
