Edith’s Delightful Desert

I am so pleased to show you, my grandniece Edith’s baby quilt. Edith arrived early, and so this quilt was not in the works (except as a twinkle in my eye). She did get a quilt early on in her life, for her time in the NICU, but now it is time for her real baby quilt.

A lot of though went into this quilt, I will share some of the thoughts with you. I decided rainbow colors would be fun, so the animals are bright! Her cousin (their mothers are sisters) was born in January and she received a quilt, “Annaleigh’s Awesome Ocean”. Both quilts were designed by Elizabeth Hartman and both use Island Batik fabric and the same background (from my time as an ambassador). Then, there is Edith’s big sister (my step-grandniece) who also needed a quilt. They share in common, the backs on the quilt and the quilting pattern is similar.

There animals are named as they were in the pattern, with the exception of the cottontail rabbit. For some reason, that critter was not named. I named him Cedric, but I am sure Edith will call them as she wishes, and that is what I want.

This is the quilting pattern I used. It was much faster than the one for Cassidy’s quilt (Double the Love) which had a lot of re-drawing the image. This is in the HandiQuilter ProStitcher library, but the design is by Deb Geissler if anyone is looking for it.

I should have thought harder about this, but because of the white, there were a few blocks that I double outlined with the machine using a function called mark. It allowed me to identify the “marks” (drawing lines point to point) and then system quilted it. Here is a Prostitcher video on this for those who want to know more. My ruler work was not as accurate and I did this on any of the animals that had white bits touching the background.

The back was the same fabric as in Cassidy’s quilt, with the exception of the pink stripe. I kind of liked that addition. I have one more Elizabeth Hartman to make, a dinosaur quilt, and I guess I am waiting for the the next grand to make that!

So sweet!!! I love the colors and how you did the border, Kathleen! Fun backing, too! I’m going to have to put that pattern on my to-do list for next year.

Hi Kathleen! Oh, so glad this pretty quilt is all ready for Edith! What a teeny tiny itty bitty thing she was when she was born! How wonderful that she will be wrapped in your love plus have all those fun animals to name and talk to. I adore everything about it but especially that colorful border and backing. Thanks for the closeup photos of the quilting. It looks nice and loose so it will be comfy cozy and quilty squishy for her. ~smile~ Roseanne

This is just adorable, Kathleen! I love Elizabeth Hartman’s patterns, but have yet to make one. Now my littles are not so little – the boys will be nine at the end of the month and the girl calls herself a “tween!!” That daisy is a great quilting motif. You did a great job using the marking. I’ve had my Avante almost five years and have never tried that. We discussed it once when we were having our ProStitcher user group at my LQS but, unfortunately, those days are no more and probably won’t be for a while.

This is so pretty!! I love the colors, I love the animals, and I really love that the cousin quits coordinate! So cute. Yes, I am sure Edith will name all the animals at some point. I will ship off my Awesome Ocean quilt to my just-turned-7-year-old niece later today–turns out it has some of her favorite colors in it. I do love Elizabeth Hartman’s patterns and yours are so fun!

This was the first pattern I ever purchased of hers but haven’t done it. I have had it for several years. I think I just might have to crack it open. Yours turned out wonderfully, thanks for showing it.

Hi Kathleen. Your quilt for Edith is a beauty, and I love that it coordinates with her cousin’s and has a link to her sister’s as well. All Elizabeth’s animals are so fun in the colours you have chosen, I am sure Edith will love it and it will spark many hours of imagination at play and bedtime. xx
