Welcome to Picnic Under the Quilt Block! This block measures 12″ x 18″ and is my contribution to the Garden Party Row Along, coordinated by Marion Pena of Seams to Be Sew.
I am not a gardener but I love my yard. As I thought about this row along I thought about different flowers, and making a beautiful block with lupines. In the end, I didn’t want to do as much appliqué as it would require (lots of petals on a lupine). I think the Covid Quarantine made me want a real party, so, I decided to have picnic under the fence. It is a shady part of my yard, but my fence does not always have a quilt block on it. Sometimes it has one, though, and the block above is from the 2020 Monthly Color Block here.
I always use Electric Quilt 8* (affiliate link) to design my blocks. I like that I can make changes and add fabric images so it will look nearly like the end result.
And, here’s a little good news. The generous folks at Electric Quilt are offering you a discount code for 20% discount code (on any products except for EQ Academy) during the entire row along. The coupon code is: GARDENPARTY20. How great is that?
And, we have another great supporter of this hop, with Northcott fabrics. They generously sent some fabric for my block; I selected ones I knew I would use – the fence, the purples, and the green! It would be part of my design no matter if I changed my mind or not.
This block above was my prototype. I liked the festive fabrics for the blanket, the fun way the broccoli fabric made fantastic watermelon strips, and the grass and fence fabric I had.
This is the finished block. I love the way it turned out and below you will find some suggestions for your version of the block.
To get the block click on the button below and while you are at it, consider trying my blog for awhile but checking the email block. This month,I have 2 other projects with free blocks/patterns and run a monthly Tips/Tutorials on the 22nd, with oodles of great information.
Now, a few suggestions before you even look at the pattern.
Be sure to watch how you cut those pieces out if you are concerned about the direction the pieces will be in on your block. You can see them laid out on my block board; I recommend using one as you construct blocks. You can find out more about the ones I am made here.
Cutting the grass: When you are getting ready to sew the grass, you make an additional cut to one of the pieces for the grass. The larger one will be trimmed on the diagonal beginning 2″ in from the edge.
This falls under the more good news. I am proud to say that my blog is the site for the Antia Goodesign giveaway! WOW! It is a gorgeous pattern with piecing and embroidery instructions. It is Periodic Table with Quilting terms…so much fun in that quilt. I am getting a machine that will be able to do some of this soon.
And, now, for the giveaway.
Please read the giveaway rules, which can be found here. Most important of the rules are two things – use a real email address, be willing to pay for shipping your prize, and you must be 18+ in order to win a gift.
