OMG Done! Split Nine Patch Quilt

I finished this lovely quilt a few days ago, later than planned. I lost track of a days and was waiting for the binding. It’s all good. It’s a sweet charity quilt for one of the Hands2Help groups.

Anyway, I started this last summer when Julie at The Crafty Quilter ran this quilt along. I knew I was busy and I did it as a leader/ender project; but something stopped me. I didn’t think it was anything big, but I was puzzled. I started sewing again, and then, I figured out why I was behind. I didn’t have the fabric to really finish, so I stopped piecing. Note to self – a note to self would have been helpful for when I picked it up a few months later. Gheez.

I learned a few new things to work on perfecting with my quilting…always a goal when I do these kinds of projects. ProStitcher has had some education videos on line during this time and I learned a little more about doing and edge 2 edge design and marking a stitch line for in the ditch. Precision is something I will need to work on, but I am getting there.

Another goal, when I participate in a QAL or SAL is to used up fabric that I have. My only real difficulty is that I had no binding. I ordered some, another part of the delay. So, my OMG for April is done and that is good.

There is a great line up of designers doing demonstrations this week. 15 minutes is the limit so they won’t be a time suck, but I am sure there will be lots of things to learn. I will post the schedule daily. And, yes, I am on Friday at 4 on Facebook and 4:30 on Instagram. The presentation will be the same so catching me in one is plenty!!

Nice quilt, Kathleen. I’m with you on needing to put notes on my quilts. I also put notes on fabric I’m holding for binding for quilts, since I’ve made the mistake of using a piece meant for binding for one quilt on another project. So now I set the fabric aside with a note and the quilt top is intended for.

Yes, it is crazy when you don’t go back and then you spend half a day figuring out what the heck was I doing!! I often make the binding as soon as I sure that it is the right one and bag it and label it! I do it less often with projects – probably because I don’t know that I am going to abandon it.

Thank you, I did love that quilting pattern and the way it sewed out. The borders need some work, but a non-quilter would never see it!

Your quilt is adorable, love the colors in these fabrics. I had not heard of this Designer tips show. Glad I popped in today. There is so much online activity(with good reason) that I can’t keep up with it all!!!

There is almost too much activity and I would say this is a pretty full event, but it will be fun to see what people do. Tammy of https://www.tamarinis.com got this going; second event of this kind. The first was a virtual quilt show with the same format. I missed that one, but got onto this one.

The aqua binding finishes it nicely. Older WIPs really do take a while to pick up and know where to start again sometimes, don’t they? I’m sure the quilt is going to be well loved and appreciated by it’s receipient.

Oh my goodness, the number of times I wish I had left myself a note on a project so I would know what my past self was thinking or planning! This is lovely, and I love the lighter color on the binding–worth waiting for, I’d say.

Those notes would be really helpful wouldn’t they! Yes, the binding worked out…I really had nothing that worked so I am glad this did.

Hi Kathleen! I sure do like this whole quilt but that teal/aqua binding really puts it over the edge for me. I have always wanted to make a split nine-patch and yours is a fabulous inspiration. I love the fabrics you chose! So good. A note to self about a note to self? That’s what the blog is for . . . HAHA! I think your quilting pattern choice looks beautiful. I suspect you will learn something new to remember each time you quilt on your new long arm. I’ll do my best to watch you on FB or IG on Friday. Great finish. ~smile~ Roseanne

The binding was just right for this quilt – hard to do on the internet, but this time it worked!
