Barn Quilt BOM – Wrap Up

I can’t believe we are at the end of this Block of the Month. I loved doing it – although there were a few challenges for me.

I should be very careful when I sew on my Janome in Maine. It’s 1/4″ is off and I often forget to reset it. It came to haunt me a few times, and it was true that it happened in the finishing of this quilt. My star border was too long, I just took off a half a star and it worked. Okay, not ideal but no one will know except you and me, please don’t tell.

I was able to get it all assembled and placed it on my guest room bed. I love it and the colors and am glad for where I decided to add some other colors. In the end, I thought it needed a border on the sides to make it fit the bid the way I like to make it. It measures 84″ x 85″. With shrinkage this is a perfect size.

My fabric was directional, so I had to be careful how I cut it. I used this method to add the borders and it worked well. I will use a loftier batting to hide some of my sins. Once washed, almost no one will notice except the hypercritical maker!

Working together is what makes this fun, so remember to check out the other quilters who are blogging, including our fab designer, Sherry!

Thank you, Sandra. I do love the colors and the fabrics I choose. Not sure where it is destined to live, but it feels rather spring-like to me.

Hi Kathleen! Wow, this quilt is much bigger than I thought it would be. It looks fabulous on your guest bed . . . and NO one would ever know about the star issue. Your quilt holder did a fabulous job, as always. ~smile~ Roseanne

My quilt holder’s arms are too short! I will have to get him to rig something up but with batting I hope it is easier once I get to quilting it!

Nice finish, Kathleen. I can’t imagine how frustrating that 1/4″ hiccup would be. What Janome model is it? I’m curious, since I sew on Janome machines.

Mine is a 3160 QC or something like that. It just is a quirky thing, that I think newer models don’t have the problem. I mostly piece on my Bernina but decided I would this one in Maine on the Janome. I also don’t know if it was the cutting I did with the die cutter but they are so precise. In the end, once quilted and washed it will be perfection.

I thought it would be fun to try and I really liked the way it changed it up! You are much too kind; the fabric was kind of fabulous!

What a spectacular finish, Kathleen. I love the colors and no one will notice if anything is a 1/4″ or even 1/2″ off. Congratulations on a bright and cheerful finish!!!

You are so right! I have a little time before I quilt it so I may look to fix a few of the egregious errors….or not. My self quarantine may afford more time than normal!
