Barn Quilt BOM – Month 5

First of all, let me wish you a very Happy New Year! I have been in your mailbox a lot this week, and its not over. Do feel free to pick and choose what interests you as there is only so much time. Now, on to the block for the Barn Quilt! This was one of those blocks which, I knew where I was going, but could never figure it out – kudos to Sherry for making it all work!

I love this block and decided the white background was boring me. I had this red Amish fabric and just had to use it. You can see why I thought it would work. My plan, in the beginning, was to use a layer cake of Gingiber Farm Fresh Fabrics for Moda. I realized I needed more and this fabric joined the party. It is a Benartex Fabric, Folk Art Fantasy, Pattern #3135-10 Stars and Horses on Red, Wagons, Starbursts. You can see where I bought this fabric in May here; there could be some if you are dying for it. Horse & buggy carriages are fairly common in the area I grew up in – in fact on the way back/forth from my brother’s on Christmas Eve we saw at least 2 on the road.

Now for some help for those of you making this quilt.

Hint 1: Write your colors on the pattern sheet to not get confused

Hint 2: The swallows are put together differently so don’t go barging ahead assuming you know what is next. I don’t know anyone who does this, do you? Yes, I had to rip out.. Half of the “swallows” are made with a “J” on both sides of the 2.5″ x 7.5″ rectangle; the other half with one “J” and one “background” on the RIGHT ( pages 17-18)! So, I needed to figure out my placement and decided to do the T (teals) fabric on the top of page 18 as in the photo.

Here is where we are headed. I am going to measure two of my favorite bedsize quilts to see where I want to “land” on size for this quilt. I am probably not piecing all the little stars in the pattern, and doing borders in the teal I have reserved…if I have enough (oh yeah why would that matter). Anyway, while you are working on this block, I will be figuring that out.

Working together is what makes this fun, so remember to check out the other quilters who are blogging, including our fab designer, Sherry!

Wow, I love that red center! And the fabric is fantastic! I lived in an area of Ohio with a lot of Amish for several years and horse & buggies going down the road behind my apartment was a common sight–the wal-mart even had a part of the parking lot designated for horses! Your version is stunning, Kathleen!

The buggies are always quite something and that fear at night of going by one and hurting someone comes back very quickly! I am glad you are enjoying my version.
