This fun quilt is my squirrel for the month and my one monthly goal. I just knew I wanted to finish this. It has been a long time coming.
My friend, Rose, who blogs at Something Rose Made, sent me some of her leftovers from a project sometime ago. She thought I had downsized myself out of fabric and that I needed some Cotton & Steel Scraps.
Well the scraps were 3.5″ wide and various lengths. I didn’t have any others like it in my stash and so for a long time it sat. Then, I thought why not just work with what I had. I saw this quilt by the instigator, Rose, and was pretty sure it would work.
Rose used Yvonne Fuchs pattern Bundle Buster which is meant for fat quarters. I didn’t have fat quarters but knew I could do an adaptation of Yvonne’s pattern. I played a little in Electric Quilt 8. It wasn’t easy as I didn’t want to worry about precise piece counts, so I just decided to wing it in the end. I figured 3×4 12″ squares would work.
What is the difference from Yvonnes and my pattern? As I finally started cutting I knew I was short; so make it work! Mine would be a rectangle. I wound up not having enough to make the square the size I wanted so I thought, I’d just go with the rectangle, 9”x12” was the finished size.
Then I quilted it on Tabitha, my HQ Sweet Sixteen using my ProStitcher. The quilting is so nice, I love it. I ran into a few bumps, really, bumps! One was caused by my machine running into the rails, and resetting itself (I swear it did) to a 1% speed. UGH. I thought I broke it but 2 techs later, we figured it out. Their service is awesome!
The batting was an 80/20 Hobbs Cotton batting*, and you can see, the definition is terrific. I used Superior So Fine 50 wt poly – #408 grey on the top and on the bottom a light blue #494. The thread was perfect throughout the quilting.
I love the way it turned out and am so glad it will go to give a child comfort.
