Awesome Ocean Block 1

Welcome to the first block of the Awesome Ocean SewAlong! Elizabeth Hartman’s pattern is so awesome (oops) and I know you will have fun.

You need no help from me on this block! I made this block very quickly – the only thing that delayed me a tiny bit was a decision to use some of the seaweed-like fabrics from another Island Batik collection. So, since it is the week before Thanksgiving, it is nice to have the easiest block first.

Organization is key for this pattern. I generally cut blocks as I go. For most of these, I cut one session and sew another. Sometimes I sew one patch at a time, sometimes not. Mostly, I recommend build one critter at a time – as the blocks get complicated you can make mistakes! My reward is that as I finish the block, I pick the fabric for the next blocks.

My hints are few for this block, but here they are. Remember: you will cut out two blocks.
HINT 1: I place both my pieces for the kelp on top of one another and cut them. This means you cut both at one time.
HINT 2: There is a cutting diagram at the top of the page if you are using the fabric like she does. I did not so I didn’t really need it.
HINT 3: Cut two of the background pieces, one for each block – its simple but I forgot this frequently when making my other quilt.
HINT 4: If you chain piece, be sure your kelp starts and ends with the pieced pieces.

That’s it. Please feel free to email me with questions! kathleen@kathleenmcmusing.com
